My website is done, why do I need maintenance?

The internet is always evolving, there are often changes and updates to themes, plugins and the core files that make up a website.  Updated functionality is one aspect of this.  All components need to be updated to run smoothly together.  One outdated component can cause segments of your site to break, so keeping everything up to date is important for your web site visitor’s experience.

Some hosts offer automatic updates, can’t I just use that?

Since the best solution is to keep everything updated, it would seem that auto updates would be the way to go, set it and forget it.  But most developers have experienced an incomplete or conflicting update enough times to know that this is great until it isn’t. Careful updating and verification will ensure that your site runs smoothly, minimizes security issues and catches conflicts quickly so that they can be resolved.
